Anyone Else Notice

Post by Fester » Tue Jan 20, 2009 12:56 pm

Just a quick wonder if anyone else has noticed a drop in fps lately.. i know this has been talked to death since TF2 has come out with updates but has anyone noticed bad fps when in battle and or connection trouble since last update?

Since the Engi up date in the heat of battle i am dropping below 20 fps.. used to never drop below 60fps.. and yes i know 20-30 fps still playable but if i am getting such a fps drop surly some are suffering worse?

Del some maps are almost unplayable for you? Dharma is dropping to near 9fps at times.. any more?

I noticed some FPS drain on a map the other night... as for remembering which map.... sorry nope!! LOL... I tend to run anywhere from 40-100 depending on whats happening but I felt an FPS drop out of action. It may have been the new map labor but not sure.

I noticed it on labor the other night, but haven't seen it anywhere else - yet!

I run with v-synch on, so may not notice it as much as those who have it turned off.

Before I started using a tweaker my fps was regularly dropping to single figures in a crowded battle, even on maps like gravelpit. I don't think I drop below 20 now, but the game does look a bit weird. I think it did get worse after the last big update, but it was so bad before it that i can't be sure.

Anyone on a low end machine I highly recommend this program http://1337.gameworldonline.be/tf2tweaker.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

As I said it makes the game look a little strange in places, but it plays so much better :D
Nicely done Bbloke!!

Yes!
I think it is due to Valve constantly adding new stuff.
I am also getting the "out of OS paged memory" much more often which I believe is due to the same problem.

The pl_zig map is very terrible on every machine.
Dharma might want to try (this is terrible) going to the 800x600 resolution, she should get x2 her normal FPS.

I dunno xexes, my experiments w/ changing res did feck all. between lowest and highest the only difference was additional fps when it was already fast enough, when the fps drops, it drops(for me) regardless of resolution...it seems that my cpu just cannot pump out the frames quick enough to the gfx card

The tweakerypoos bosco suggested can get you a bit extra w/ the expense of the uglies.
disabling ragdolls, physics, sprays, running in dx8 all gets you a little bit

Most any stock map seems ok, with the exception of the bridge on 2fort, where I get sub 30 regardless, and occasionally on lagwater basin

This happened me before, I think after the 1st update, my fps seemed to drop..I tried everything, even reinstalling windows...a sign of defeat in my eyes...and in the end, I ended up changing the processor for a faster one, that got me over 30 again....but it's since dropped again

...and then there is l4d....supersmooth and swishy looking w/ higher graphics settings

Just watch the valve-time clock and wait for those engine optimisations to come along I suppose

I know it is sacreligious to even think of suggesting it, but have you tried playing on another 32player custom map server? Does your pc chug as much?

In the meantime I am gonna make a supersqueaky clean game install on the server, totally devoid of plugins etc and run it for a night, just to see that we dont have a greedy plugin sapping frames..cos serverside fps does fluctuate, but it doesnt seem to dip enough for it to be seen as client side problem...I'd still like to eliminate it tho

vertical synchronisation - the frames pumped out by your gfx card is locked to that of your monitors refresh rate...normally 60 or 75Hz. You only get full frames rendered on screen. It can stop 'tearing' if you are pumping out too many frames.
tearing is where new frame information comes in while a previous frame is due to be drawn so you get part of one frame and part of another.

Noticable when turning especially
