From what I've seen the best weapons are the bigass broadsword and the sledgehammer for hitting hard, and the flail for chaining sweet combos for instant wins, which is pretty much how mine and jased's brutes are doing pretty decent.
Also I would like to point out (again) that all the randomness can suck. Take this guy for example http://4ul3.mybrute.com/cellule. Looks like he keeps drawing the short straw on them bonuses
