Nice balanced post. You are right to be proud of it.

And sadly I have to agree. I guess partly to blame for this is the way spies are buffed in recent patches and the easy target that heavies provide if their team doesn't cover their backs.

As a spy myself, I have to honestly say that if there is a great heavy around, he is my prime target. I will not waste my time trying to get his medic. A great heavy can wreak havoc on your team and unless distracted you probably won't get that second backstab in anyway. Medics on the other hand will be completely surprised by the sudden loss of their heavy and most likely rout, giving you another chance for a backstab or retreat.

Heavies, neglected at they may be, are still the cornerstone of any good offense (mostly in a public setting). Able to shift their damage from player to player, instead of one rocket or sticky of massive damage. They might not get the most kills, but they get the most mileage out of their gun (never wasting +150 damage on a 15 hp scout). That and them sporting enough health to block everything but a critrocket, I can't see why it's not played that much.

Maybe all in all, the learningcurve is a bit off. At first the heavy doesn't seem to have that many angles to it and most people will treat it like that, but after a while the heavy becomes more nuanced and certainly more fun.

nice one meme .

yes , playing heavy is by far one of the nerve wrecking rolls
still , when u have a good medic/s and a supportive team , its like driving a tank on auto fire through a group of marshmello people blasting all of them to pieces leaving only debry ...

recently playing heavy as well , like it a lot , tho i get stabbed torched crited demoed and thrown away (force of nature ..) .
still , after an hour+ of "heavy duty" , i need a massage to my right click finger and my nerve system ... :)

if only heavys had the energy drink , they wouldnt waste half of play time runing from spawn to fighting point (and getting stabbed by chairman / raurio / crimzon / aztek / zraik and other PREAKS!! ) ;-)

oh , after that explaintion its a good oppertunity to appoligise frineds for sometimes my nerves bursting out a bit , its really only in that game point time zone

basicly , i wouldnt trade this server and his community for anything , u are a special bunch of people :)

sorry if anyone by mistake got hurt - no intention such as this , only the rage of game and wrecked nerves (and sore backstabed back.. ;-) ) which after a minute or two - gone :)

Not bad meme, not bad at all. A very balanced look at the heavy by all accounts, well written and definitely giving a good idea of the heavy's place in the team.

There were a few times i wanted to disagree, but in reality the article was not written with of view of telling people how to play the heavy. You covered his role well, his hardships and victories, strengths and weaknesses.

It's true that the heavy can be easily neutralised by a good few classes. No matter how good you are people see you as the big target and a lot of good players are going to try and take you down. And take you down they will.

So i say this, be aggressive! If a demo is attacking you get up in his face, jump at him. When people expect you to run away, turn around and charge them. In the split second they spend getting ready to chase you, you've gotten your gun spinning and they are gonna die.
The heavy is never weaker than when he is running away.

No surrender, even in the face of armageddon!

You wouldn't believe just how many times I had to rewrite the second half of the article to look more like a view-point article rather than a how-to-play one

Typically when playing any competitive online gaming, at times one knows when there's really no hope of escape. This is when I employ my own rule.
"I might go down, but I am gonna go down kicking and screaming!"
Awesome article oldmeme, a lot of people mistakenly overlook Natasha, which can be quite devastating against soldiers and demomen who count on ducking in and out of corners to shoot at ya. As a soldier I really become frustrated when a Natasha slows me down to what really is a standstill - a sitting duck.

I try that. "Right make this death count" I tell myself, then before I've had a chance to reload my rocket a heavy appears and starts critting and less than a second later I'm down and out. Doh!
