when did you got internet ?

i am not talking about a dial up connection but real interwebs where you dont have to dial up

i make this post because i saw it is exactly 10 years ago i told my parents they must have the new cable internets.

that modem was hackable where you can bust your download and upload limit.
also i had to restart my modem once a week before it sended the info back to the isp. ( so they wouldnt notice my connection goes way faster)
my parents didnt want to pay for it alone, so i also payed the half. wich was at that time already pertty much.
in euros it was about 40 euros a month...but hey we had internet.

think i dialled up for a year earlyer but
exact date of cable internet realisation: 8 september 1999

i mainly played quake 3 arena and browse the web, finally i could download the essential mixes at a normal speed...wich took me 2 days with dial up only take about a cpl hours because upload was never great at that time.
had a hotmail emaill adress and watched free porn ofcourse
also was one of those guys who used napster as download source

since when are you connected with the internet?
how and what did you do on the webs?

I only got 2kb/s .......And I've actually only had adsl since I moved to the UK 4 yrs ago.

Hmmm, the first real uplink to the intarwebs.... good question.

I think it stared in '94 with a dail-up modem, and then later on ISDN, which would be about 2 years later.

About a year from that (and countless large bills, due to quake2/Jedi Knight) moving on to cable/DSL the first 'continuous' connection.

Then came ADSL, this should have been around 2000.

Some moving around and before I knew it I was hooked up to high-speed ADSL again.

Some more moving around and now we are hooked up to fiberglass. It has been like that for about 1/2 a year now.

Also: Napster, WinMX, Google old-style, XOOM, altavista (when they still actually had a mountain picture), XS4ALL Quake 2 servers. Oh man, the memories

Had a modem for about 5 years, then in 2002 when I did an exchange in Germany, chipped in with my guest-brothers for a DSL connection, and then used YahooSauger all the time for downloading lots of... um, family photo albums ^^ each family photo album was one file which told you where 200 .rar files were located, and the YahooSauger then downloaded them all for you.

Funny thing was though, that my guest-brothers complained everytime I started downloading because their ping in counterstrike went through the roof, even when I wasn't downloading and just playing Enemy Territory.. which back then, to me at least, was total bollocks.. I mean, DSL, "THE DSL" connection, the fastest thing in the WORLD, at least 10x faster than my parents dial-up (which they still have), and they were telling me that 3 ppl couldn't all play FPS games at the same time, preposterous

It's funny though, for some reason I managed to play TFC back then on a 56k modem where the provider was located about 90km away, had a ping of 600-800, depending on time of day, and now if my ping in TF2 hits 260 or so, I start thinking "damn that's laggy"

Hhhmm napster yes....took fucking for ever to get a file down at 2kb/s, quake 2...meh was playing quake 1 in irelands first cyber cafe (apparently)....and altavista! hotbot all the way

ive had adsl now for 4 years but i still have acess to a 56k dial up connection for when my main connection goes down, ah the good old days of sniping thru walls with my 56k connection on tfc
