TF2 Bots

Post by Hal » Mon Dec 21, 2009 4:02 pm

Has anyone tried the new bot feature in the latest update?
If not, you guys should try it ;) They are somewhat fun if no-one's on the server.

Just create a server with a KOTH map and open console and type in tf_bot_add and tah dah! A bot joins you!

Just remember the bots can't play Scout or Spy, and don't play other maps if its not koth (Not sure about user-created koth maps through)

But regardless some of the bots have some funky names like:

CEDA
The Freeman
NotMe and many more.

They are useful for getting achievements without getting killed off by a elite player, or playing the game without some guy on the mic complaining about how much you suck at this game and they also perfect for training :) I add on more about this. (If I remember)

But when you have a moment, have a go with them :D

For achievements I would rather use regular bots (eg. on ctf_bball2), and btw I posted a video about the bots here (and a link to prebuilt nav files as well).

Edit: Oh and: considering that the bots are still beta they are great, except that the engineers on gravel pit sometimes try to build just outside the red spawn room, where buildings are not allowed; and that once I've seen 3 red engineers building stuff on CP A when it was already captured. :)

OR - you could just earn them in normal play. You never know - you might learn how to play that class properly 8-)

I totally agree with Toco.

Johnimus, I understand, and just so you know I've got my Sniper achievements by normal gameplay. But with the Scout, the Demoman, and the Soldier, the case was different. It took too much time to advance, and especially as a Scout I sucked so much trying to complete the achievements that I could have utilized the time I wasted to be something more useful like a Medic. When I played solely for the achievements, I was nearly no credit to my team. I think I should learn the class later when achievements don't distract me.

Know that I only play TF2 for fun and only when I have time, and if I suck at a class, I just change to another. (But that doesn't mean I don't want eg. the Soldier unlockables. Who wouldn't want to blow the horn?)

And back to the topic, as of yesterday the TF2 Blog now describes the parameters you can use with tf_bot_add. It's much more easier to fill the server with bots that way.

Haha no worries dude - I was only having a gentle dig. I know exactly what you mean about the scout - I'm useless with it so would probbably be better to use bots to get them - but I play it so rarely I don't see the point.

And in all honesty I don't mind admitting that I've adjusted my playing style to get a few acheivements (the 10000+ healing one for the medic - I just hung around at the back with my back to a dispenser so I didn't get schtabbed). I also farmed the multiple buildings one with a demo. But all the others I've earned fair and square in normal play.

Having tested the bots on koth_harvest_final, I can say that:
  • Sometimes Pyros now tend to spawn camp (haven't yet seen any other classes doing that).
  • Also an enemy Demoman found me twice behind my back somehow. So taking alternative routes more often definitely works.
  • They take roaming around too seriously though, eg. at round start noone started capturing the point until I did.
  • Medics are lovely: I get (over)healed and ubered more frequently.
  • Dodging definitely works now; I can kill 3 Heavies in a single detonation of stickies. :) Heavies feel less accurate now, and it doesn't feel like I'm playing against the best Heavies of Fester's Place.
  • Spawn camping from the roof is still too much fun: they still don't know how to access the roof, not sure if that's because they don't know the waypoints to there. And if they did, Snipers would be deadly... (They are slightly better at choosing sniper spots thought.)
  • Healing a Soldier on the point and seeing him destroy a level 1 sentry was nice. But healing a Pyro and seeing him do nothing against that sentry but moving around and eventually dying? I don't think he was out of shotgun ammo.
  • It still sucks that they always know where I am. Eg. I can't surprise a Pyro from above. And I can't backstab anyone unless they are busy shooting at someone else: they always turn their backs as they knew I was a Spy.
  • Finally I can see a Heavy changing to shotgun when being out of minigun ammo.
  • Bots tend to take cover on low health, not sure if they did before but it's nice too.
  • New nice bot names like 0xDEADBEEF and MindlessElectron...
