FAO Nova, WWII radio/data transmission using modulated light

For anyone else wondering, me and Nova were discussing on the server last night about an interest he had in a project of data transmission using LED's. However it reminded me of some clever kit (for the time) the Germans had created in WWII.

The device looks like a pair of binoculars minus its large power supply box. One side of the "binocular" is the light source that has various type lenses (for different conditions) which create the beam of modulated light. The modulated light is generated by the users voice and the other side has the light sensor which converts the person you are communicating with incoming light into voice data for you to hear.

The idea was, that there were areas where standard radio telephones wouldn't work (due to terain etc). However this device worked on line of sight:-

Interesting video, impressive that they can transmit at that frequency with such an old light bulb.

In case you were interested, the video I was originally talking about is here:

Same idea but for different uses!
