DVD Player VS Blu-Ray Player

Post by BBloke » Thu Oct 30, 2008 10:24 pm

I've thought about updating my TV and DVD player. At the moment they are the cheap arse end of nowhere. 32" tube TV and A £20 DVD player both from Asda. Do the job just dandy but it's time for a change.

I've done some reading but thought I'd post up and see what you all thing.

The TV is going to wait for the time being (maybe until February next year) but the DVD is gonna be at the end of next month.

So far I'm stuck with thinking about a DVD player or Blu-Ray player. One feature thats a must is USB slot and DivX capable. (same as Jase's machine.. bloody nice idea :) )

So far I think I'm covered on the DVD Player with this one: Oppo 980 (http://www.opposhop.com/en/article/37/o ... 1080p_hdmi). I've seen a friends (although an old model) and it's upscaling technology is pretty legendary.

It's a high price and has made me wonder if its worth investigating a Blu-Ray player.

Do any of you have any reviews or reccommendations on either types?

I believe you can get a PS3 (which includes a blue ray drive) for a cheaper price than a blu-ray player, and you can watch Dvds off that. Just thought I'd throw that in.

Yup I've heard that as far as blue ray goes the PS3 is about as good as anything else. The only thing its let down on is the upscaling isn't quite as good as a dedicated player - but thats a minor irritation when you consider the PS3 has WIPEOUT!!!

screw blu-ray totally not worth it
invest yer cash in faster broadband and dl rips free of mandatory horseshit

a tv or dvd player w/ ethernet and DLNA would be the way forward imo

Thanks guys. I had thought about a PS3 but I doubt I need another games machine. Although Rurairo's is a nice pice of kit. Wipeout is awesome and so was that Starburst? game. <Sigh> Too many games not enough time.

Del, I'm on 20mb and I've maxed my connection out at 1Mb/s on various downloads. I do download a lot but not as much as I used to.

If Blu-Ray is'nt worth it then looking at the options the Oppo unit is well worth the money in the long run.

A concern is standard definition or DVD definition upscaled to HD. I've seen some standard definition signals on HD TV's and they look absolutely awful. A lot of pixelation and blockiness. From what I've read its down to the built in upscaler on the TV. Seems the blurp "cheap aint cheap" is applicable.
