Several years ago, he sold the Bowie bond, which basically meant that he got around 50m for a few years and if by chance he died in those few years, the owners of the bond would get his back catalouge (which in the event of his death would be worth tonnes). Anyway, he didn't die, and in those years used the 50m to set up loads of lucrative internet and art businesses.

Hell, at one point, I think he released his own brand of personally designed, super expensive wallpaper!
