I am completely paranoid of this. This is exactly the reason why I don't even give out the US State that I live in or even my first name!

I know for a fact that you can mine just about anything that you need from people search etc sites if you have a piece of information to start with. License plate (better watch out next time you roadrage), cell phone number (omg myspace comments?), home phone, name, etc... and then you're at the mercy of whoever is googling you. I think the video does a fine job of demonstrating how easy it is to obtain this information. What if the person looking you up is mad at you? Ohnoes!

And to me, what's even scarier than that - is that you don't even need that initial piece of information nowadays. I got into a heated arguement that one could segment their online aliases and real-life internet presences if they were careful, and thus retail a certain level of anonymity and privacy, and lost miserably. The valid points were that as someone got to know you they mine innocent pieces of information like gender, age, occupation and is then used to cross-reference your aliases. Another valid point was the mention that they can always hire a private investigator; there will always be a way. And then this person demonstrated by finding out my name, location, and student directory page in ten minutes.

I laugh when I put my name in google cause it comes up that I'm the headteacher of some random school somewhere. Brilliant!

Ok the more of this I watch the more paranoid I get. How can you set up a dynamic IP address?

you can't, it depends on your provider and it wouldn't make any difference

Think you need to talk to your ISP.
In Ireland dynamic's standard. We have to pay for a static.

I'm very conscious about my "digital footprint". I don't have a facebook, bebo or mySpace.
My name is very common so that makes it a lot harder to track me even if you have it. There were 2 others in my year in school with the same name. To date I've met a total of 9 of me.
Every year or so my avatar changes too.

I know it's a little paranoid but that's the way I do it.
I've done too many things over the years. I don't want to be found.

as smokedef says, it doesnt matter. It's all logged anyway. Serverside on the sites you visit and by your isp as per (engage wikipedia filter) Directive_2006/24/EC, ie the Data Retention Directive which
requires Member States to ensure that communications providers must retain, for a period of between 6 months and 2 years, necessary data as specified in the Directive

* to trace and identify the source of a communication;
* to trace and identify the destination of a communication;
* to identify the date, time and duration of a communication;
* to identify the type of communication;
* to identify the communication device;
* to identify the location of mobile communication equipment.

The data is required to be available to competent national authorities in specific cases, "for the purpose of the investigation, detection and prosecution of serious crime, as defined by each Member State in its national law".
Of course, nothing to stop the data falling into the hands of private business...MAFIAA hands a strongly worded legal letter to an ISP and boom, all yer info is in their hands. Good old Oirelande goes above n beyond and keeps the info for 3yrs according to wiki page( but I thought it was 5)
