I've only really played UT and UT2004 along with TF2 online. My main game has always been flight simming, IL2 1946. A WW2 flight sim that has yet to be beaten in almost every aspect of its genre.
Alas though, it is going the way of many online games before it and probably to the point of CS. In my most active days I would fly every night for at least 2 hours. I provided the tightest anti-cheat server around for approx 12 players and people harassed the shit out of me because it had a queue before the server started (much like Festers'

). All done from home on a standard BB line. I treated rule breakers and suspicious flyers exceptionally badly. The good ones always returned and apologised and the bad were either banned for life or never returned anyway.. and we all flew happily ever after.
Up until recently the game has been relatively secure but cheaters have still popped up but alas the code has been broken and hacks and mods have started to filter through a once self contain program.
In the old days there was CFS (A microsoft flight sim). It was very lax in its code and flight models were managed in text files. Modify the file and you could have a bi-plane flying like a super jet. Well the game I love is heading in the same direction. I have left a squad of almost 2 years due to the long standing rule changes to incorporate mods as well as other accusations made toward me (but I digress).
Most of these mods are client based and cannot be detected and although sometimes offer little in the way of an advantage. There is still that possibility of changes to speed and turn ability as well as changing 20mm canon bullets to wire guided proximity missiles that almost appeared during 1946-1947 (and yep it has been done).
Before the game was cracked I've seen planes fly around with wings like teabags and taking reams of ammo but flew without effect. I've seen lag warps, CPU spike evasion, individual plane stutters and odd flight dynamics but I fear the worst is to come.
I've never been one to boast or lay claims to being good or great. I can hold my own (just) but in a WW2 plane I'm damn near lethal. When I shoot, I rarely miss and when I hit it's normally enough. I've reached hit rates of 10%+ (in a ww2 fighter that is high) where averages tend to be between 3-5% and taken down 3-5 planes per flight when the timing, angles and more importantly other teams players and planes are in the area.
It is a different game but cheating has the same fucking impact. It just kills the shit out of it unless you are within a damn find group of people.. like here.
