I wasn't that impressed with XP Home so I would opt for Professional personally. I doubt Ultimate is worth the extra over Pro and at £89 it's a bargain.

Here's a question (and probably a stupid one) as I've never had to upgrade my OS, only reinstall a few times.

If I bought Windows 7, would I be able to upgrade from my XP, keeping everything that's installed etc, or will I need to reformat my drive/create a partition and install it fresh? Needing to reinstall all my programs?

From Windows XP to Windows 7
Information here is still a bit murky because Microsoft has not specified which XP editions will be eligible. The good news is that the company has confirmed that users currently running Windows XP will be able to buy the cheaper upgrade option of Windows 7. However, they will only be able to perform a clean install. The hassle of backing up applications and user data will fall on the user; the upgrade process will not backup anything.

It was a Microsoft decision to remove IE from the European versions and a Microsoft decision to put as little work as possible into making that IE free version upgradable so it wouldn't be out in time for the general release. It is Microsoft going for woe is me look what the big bad europe made me do!

True, true. While the EU made a reasonable decision regarding the fact that IE is forced on the standard Windows user (One of the main reasons it is still has the most users), MS decided to be as much of a jackass as possible concerning browser alternatives, only time will tell if this method will actually result in less people using IE and maybe the M$ image deterioration even more, or not.
