oops, forgot to mention the name. It's called 'Ultimate Wizard'. Never played Chucky Egg but judging from pics Wizard seemed a bit more complex.
Grab key 1 to open the door to a switch that opens the door for key 2 which unlocks the door to the next level and so on.

I think Anima is a pretty cool guy, eh has an angry looking corpse instead of legs and doesn't afraid of anything.

To answer your question, he does walk, he gets pulled up out of hell through a portal in the ground. Also, he has a killer wink, literally.

chuckie egg was fantastic. Wasted many hours getting loads of lives and clocking the game.
