3 Dimensional television (and gaming!)

Post by German » Tue Mar 16, 2010 1:48 pm

Yo guys,

Check THIS out!

I'm working at the samsung dealer days and the crazy asians have really blown my mind this time!
Apperently samsung will launch they're newest LED en LCD TV's which will be able to create a 3D vision.

The effect really is astonishing, when i first heard abuut (TOCO! ;) ) it i thaught it would be bad, yet they have come up with a good stable shutterglass system.
I just played a game with "3d enhancement mode" on, which is also really good, my driving in forza 3 took a giant leap because you can really see the depth.

The salesman can't really tell me the nice new features or why 3D television would need 2 HDMI cables instead of 1. I now a little about it like you need a 200hz tele because you will need a 100 hertz per eye etc.

I was wondering if anyone could open up a can of geekness and get more technical than the sales guys over here.

i know that nvidia's 3D tech requires glasses and the right kind of graphics card. i think tv's tho have managed to do away with them

The shutter glasses will have an infra-red sensor that communicates with a receiver. I believe that's where your other cable comes in. HDMI 1.4, to be exact. The glasses will also cost about $150 (USD).

IMO, polarisation is the way to do it.
Two polarising lenses for the glasses (very cheap) and then you can either flip on every frame or have every second pixel for one eye. I know the flip option is available already. Technology might not be able to cram enough pixels together for the other option to keep pace with standard displays yet. Unsure.
Polarisation explained simply

Samsung will throw in the glasses if bought u buy TV and 3D blu ray player, from what i can gather anyway. Need a pair of glasses for everyone watching though. I would imagine that the interconnect between tv and glasses would be handled by a proprietary samsung connection, not the second HDMI port, my samsung HDTV has 4 bloody HDMI inputs, just for the hell of it, i only use one!
There are other methods, some that dont even require glasses but you have to be sitting dead centre to tv, read here. Needs work but has promise.

EDIT;
Follow the Autostereoscopy link on that page, linked to main page so ye can see what else is on offer.

Good info here too.

IMHO, fuck 3D, went to see Alice in wonderland the other day in the cinema, put the glasses on, and the screen lost like 40% brightness. Now i havnt tried 3D on a tv yet but it cant be too much different. Give me HD content with vibrant colours and sharp edges any day of the week!

Gotta agree with you there German, also saw Alice only half of the movie was 3D and it wasnt that great (3d effects that is)

Dont believe the 3D will be held by a samsung proprietary device, I belive it will be something that will work with 3d Tvs that start to come out, either samsung or not. You probabably will have a receptor for an X number of glasses, or else you would needa crapload of money so your friends could watch TV aswell (not that LED Tv´s are still cheap though :P)

:HJ:

Whyt wont the cinema 3d glasses (look like old shades, are not red and blue) work at home, would love to try the nvidia 3d thing :P

end :HJ:

The cinema ones work by only allowing in light from one projector through each lens. One for vertical polarised light the other for horizontal. For any frame both images are displayed at the same time. Each projector's image passes through a polarising sheet before hitting the screen that are set up so that they deliver light waves that are perpendicular to each other so the lenses can block one image and let the other through.
My guesstimation from what I read above is that the shutter glasses work by alternating which eye you can see through at any one time. Each frame is shown twice (slightly differently for the 3D effect) on screen. The glasses will physically alternate so that each eye gets one copy and you then see in 3D. The TV will have to have twice the refresh rate that you would need if it wasn't 3D capable. The glasses will need to be able to switch scores of times every second. Expensive.

Good point actually on the glasses but it means there will be a "format war", ie which standard to use, which will take forever to settle and at that stage there will be something new out.

' Samsungs new 4D tv, pause space and time while you experience your favorite shows in different dimensions, how will Lost actually end? The choice is yours as you chose from infinite universes to view it in ' yada yada, imagie the T & C's in that one, at least 1 doppleganger required.

Random! :smoker:

Wouldnt put it past them though, samsung tv must have samsung glasses, sony need sony stc, start a new money racket for themselves. The bastards!
I like ATI's attempt at full emersion, eyefinity, but obviously has its restrictions.
